Seminar: A land trust perspective on collaborative land conservation and restoration in SE Arizona

Abstract:

Land conservation plays a crucial role in preserving natural ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, confronting a changing climate and maintaining the balance between human development and functioning ecosystems. In southeastern Arizona, where diverse landownership, habitats, and climate stressors intersect, collaborative efforts are essential for effective land conservation. This presentation explores the multifaceted approach to land conservation, focusing on the role of land trusts in land conservation, stewardship, restoration, and community engagement.

You will learn about the land protection process, including what conservation easements are, how they intersect with private property rights, and what tools exist to conserve lands. Once land is protected, the responsibility to responsibly steward the land in perpetuity begins. This includes landowner and partner relations, monitoring, and landscape restoration.
